    Delicious Food, Excellent Service

Nathaniel and his team at Contemporary knock it out of the park! They helped develop a menu that was special to our day and were open when I asked for a few changes (e.g., salad options) prior to the wedding date. Our bar service was also through Contemporary, and they did an awesome job! Thank you so much, Nathaniel!!

    Best caterer ever

I can't enough good things about Contemporary Catering. My guests were SHOCKED by the professionalism and service. We had 160 guests, and it was important to us to go with a caterer of high quality food as well as service. Contemporary comes with MORE staff than most other catering companies. This makes a HUGE difference to your guests overall experience. It honestly felt like we were at a 5 star restaurant at our own wedding. The food was AMAZING, the bartenders were super fun, and no one ever had to ask for more water or wine, because a server was already there filling up their glass. Schedule a tasting with them ASAP (they book way in advance). You won't regret it.

    THANK YOU Contemporary!!

Contemporary Catering satisfied not only our tastebuds, but our budget, high standards of service, and desire for culinary creativity on our wedding day.

Contemporary Catering recently catered our wedding at Cielo Farms as they were the venue’s required vendor. As Catering is a huge part of a wedding, this requirement helped us narrow down our options & we all immediately felt a weight off of our shoulders as soon as we met the staff. Rob and the whole team were incredible off the bat. They continued to deliver throughout the entire YEAR-LONG process! Rob & Elise worked with us to stay on track with our budget, and accommodate our dietary requests/restrictions. From bartenders to cooks to captains, the entire staff was professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. The service was far beyond expectations. I didn’t hear a single complaint, which is hard to achieve when you are feeding 175 people! In fact we received several compliments that it was the best food our guests hav ever had at a wedding. The presentation of the appetizers and buffet was simply breathtaking. It was the dinner party of our lives, and I’m so glad we were in the hands of Contemporary Catering!

The people at Contemporary Catering really went above and beyond for us. Food is SUPER important to both my husband and myself. Having some restaurant experience myself, service is just as important as the food itself. They truly excelled at both! We wanted our guests to feel special and well cared for on our wedding day and Contemporary Catering was the best partner in making that happen. Every single step from initial phone conversations to developing our menu to choosing rentals felt so custom and personal. I never felt like just a name or a dollar sign. They also worked with us to keep things really close to our budget while still getting the most for our money. We received endless compliments from our guests and other vendors about how awesome Contemporary was to work with and how wonderful the food was. My family and I felt taken care of all day and that meant so much to us. Basically they treated us and our guests like royalty, made really unique/amazing food, were great partners to our other vendors and made the entire planning process so much easier. We cannot recommend them highly enough! One last thought: You get what you pay for. I almost went with another company that was only slightly cheaper. After hearing a couple negative stories about them, we decided that we'd rather pay a little more and get exactly what we expect. And actually we got even more. It was the best money we spent, hands down and I'm glad my instinct led me to hire them. You will absolutely not be disappointed if you choose them to partner with in making your day amazing!!

Rob Pausmith and the team at Contemporary Catering catered our wedding a couple months ago and our guests are STILL raving about them. One gentleman, who is well traveled and has amazing taste, said that the meal was one of the best he’d ever had in his life. Rob spent an afternoon with my wife and I and created a whole menu based on our different upbringings, culture, (Filipino, British, but also Southern/ Virginia), and was able to create an original and delectable meal, that somehow told our story, and was presented exactly to fit in with our elegant/rustic theme. They truly went all out with the details, and our experience and the experience of our guests both with the food, AND (and it’s important) the Service, was truly seamless. They helped to make it so that all we and our guests had to do was enjoy our day. Weddings are difficult enough - contemporary catering can take a lot of pressure off, while bringing a mind blowing food experience to your wedding. Rob was also instrumental in helping us put together, and communicate with the rest of our vendor team. We couldn’t recommend them higher.

Contemporary Catering is incredible. Period. Hire them. It will be the best decision you make. It certainly was ours.

My (now) wife and I spent over a year planning our wedding weekend and Rob, Rachel, and, of course, Chef Nate, were there for us every step of the way.

First, the food: It is 5-stars, no joke. I am a “foodie” and a bit of a self-admitted food snob. Honestly, I would drive an hour daily to Encino to eat in their test kitchen 7 days a week if they would let me. Even now, three weeks after our wedding, our guests continue to rave to me about the food (pro tip: you NEED to serve the mini chicken and waffles appetizer). Trust me when I tell you that their execution was flawless and the quality was exquisite.

Second, the people: You will not find a more invested, passionate, and sincere team of individuals who love what they do and are so good at it. They are unbelievably responsive, overly generous with their time, extremely attentive to detail and endlessly patient. Without a doubt, we can say that thanks to Contemporary our wedding day was perfect and we are so grateful to everyone on the team.

Rob and his team provided so much more value than I ever thought possible. We will ALWAYS refer Contemporary to our friends, families, and loved ones in need of wedding catering and, personally, we can’t wait to work with them again to cater other events in our future! Thank you, yet again, Rob, Rachel, and Chef Nate!

I cannot say enough good things about the amazing food that Contemporary Catering provided for my wedding. As vegans, it was important to my husband and I to have an entirely plant-based menu from start to finish and Contemporary Catering pulled that off even more deliciously than we expected. Everything was fresh, healthy, and insanely tasty! I definitely recommend Contemporary Catering, especially if you have any dietary needs such as being vegan or any allergies. They took our needs seriously and wowed everyone. A meal from Contemporary Catering will not be one your guests will soon forget!

The world needs to know about Rob Pausmith and Contemporary Catering.

I hired Contemporary Catering for my wedding, which was a three-day event with more than 200 guests. We retained Contemporary to provide the catering for all three days. They knocked it out of the park.

First, Rob was simply a joy to deal with every step of the way. Weddings can be extremely stressful. Our wedding would have been a pressure cooker were not for Rob. He called us at home to make sure everything was going smoothly. He introduced us to our flower vendor. He took an interest in our wedding and made us feel like we were the most important people on earth. It was incredible to deal with someone we trusted, someone who at all times acted with the utmost of honesty and integrity. It was like dealing with an old friend (even though we just met).

Second, the food was absolutely sublime. Chef Nate took an active role in helping to plan our menu. He offered creative input and generated new ideas for dishes he had never prepared before. And Chef Nate really can do it all. Contemporary handmade the tortillas for our rehearsal dinner. We had a floating burrata bar with an incredible charcuterie selection as wedding appetizers. Chef Nate handmade ravioli for the vegetarians and served perfectly prepared tri-tip for the carnivores. Virtually everyone I spoke with said that this was the best food they have ever had at a wedding.

Rob and Chef Nate played a very special role in the most important day of our lives. It simply would not have been the same without them. We cannot wait to use Contemporary for our next event (hopefully, a baby shower in the near future). I recommend Contemporary without reservation.

Nace is the man. As the owner and head chef of Contemporary Catering, this guy is non-stop. While many other vendors took their sweeeet time coming up with a menu and pricing, Nace created his menu and proposal while we spoke at our first meeting. He was straight-forward and fair, was incredibly sweet and accomodating and created a delicious, creative menu that met our semi-foodie needs exactly.

As soon as I found Nace, the rest of the wedding just fell into place. He helped with absolutely everything-- rentals, flowers, everything. Seriously, the guy's been doing this for a long time and he hasn't lost any of his unbelievable enthusiasm, professionalism, or creativity.
He was flexible when I needed to change things back and forth, back and forth :) and even came up with amaaaazing, truly unique, ice cream at the last minute to pass around at the reception.

He treated us like family and we got amazing value for our money. Everyone should be so lucky as to work with Nace and Jenny at Contemporary Catering.

This review has been a long time coming. For nearly six months my wife and I traded emails with Nathaniel, organized a gazillion tastings, and shook up the menu more often than we can remember. See, my wife is Vietnamese, and I am Peruvian. We wanted a menu that reflected both our cultures, and our passion for great food & presentation. Nathaniel and his team stepped up and accomplished what no one else in LA could on our wedding day. What started as a challenge to any caterer willing to accept it, our wedding menu became an exercise in patience and experimentation. From the Tiradito & Pork Bao appetizers, to the Molecular Gastronomy Amuse Bouche, to the Pisco Sours, the Bun Tit Nun and the Lomo Saltado -- Nate, we can't thank you enough, from the bottom of our PeruViamese hearts, for the immeasurable effort and attention you gave us. My wife and I produce events for a living and were humbled by the dedication and service Contemporary Catering offered us from the beginning. It's truly rare in this industry or any other. We hope to one day work with you again; maybe at one of our corporate events, and again - THANK YOU for making our dream date come true!

    - Michael & Melissa

Words cannot express how happy I am that we hired Contemporary Catering for our wedding. From beginning to end Nathaniel and Jenny were extremely helpful, professional and responsive. I got the sense that they really cared about our wedding and truly went the extra mile for us – more like 1,000 miles! Jenny met us at the venue on multiple occasions and helped me with so many aspects of our wedding beyond the food, from the rentals, to the timeline, to helping me find pashminas to buy days before the wedding. Jenny and Nathaniel were both present at our wedding and made sure everything ran smoothly. Nathaniel even fixed a strand of lights that went out during our reception. They were both extremely attentive to our needs and made sure we ate and that all of the guests were enjoying the food. The food was just as delicious at our tasting as it was at the wedding. So many of our guests raved about the food and appetizers and loved it because it wasn’t standard “wedding food”. Our wedding truly would have not been the same without the help of Contemporary Catering and, of course, their wonderful food. I would highly recommend them to anyone planning a wedding or special event. I want to have another party just so I can hire them again!

It's going to be hard for me to convey in a simple review just how much Contemporary Catering did for our wedding. Nathaniel and Jenny were so invested in our event and we enjoyed every minute we spent with them. Getting married at the Exposition Park Rose Garden & Natural History Museum in downtown LA meant an extraordinary amount of moving parts were involved, and they pulled off a wedding that surpassed our wildest dreams.
Our parents were very hesitant about our venue, and Nathaniel was able to ease all of their apprehensions, whether it was building a kitchen outside the venue, adding lighting, reviewing contracts, and more. Nathaniel met with my family, with my husband and me, and with me one-on-one a number of times, and these status updates always made me feel completely confident and less stressed about all the details that go into a wedding. We were constantly in communication the week before the wedding, and he couldn't be more supportive and attentive.
On the day of the wedding, Nathaniel was so attentive to my needs, and even handled my "eyelash emergency" with great professionalism. Our customized menu was so unique and delicious--our guests are still talking about the chilled cantaloupe soup, the duet of proteins, and the abundance of appetizers.
Contemporary Catering not only gets the job done, they surpass your expectations in every way, and fill your guests up with great, creative dishes.
Thank you Nace, Jenny, and the rest of the Contemporary Catering team!!!

The entire staff at Contemporary Catering was unbelievably professional, responsive, and helpful in planning and executing the perfect event. They worked with us in delivering a top-quality & creatively customized menu to our 230+ guests, and for a phenomenal price. I would recommend them to anyone looking to hire true professionals who are passionate about the business they are in for whatever your event type or size. Thank you Contemporary Catering!

The caterer, Contemporary Catering, for my daughter’s May 29th wedding was booked well in advance. I spoke directly with Nathaniel for the quote and had the pleasure of working with him though the process. Before I rate the food, I will begin with the preparations.

He recommended a rental company but I chose to go with a different vendor, Imperial Rentals. Adrineh from Imperial was very nice and provided some beautiful pictures and ideas. Imperial promised to have the tent fully finished and up on Thursday and all the rentals delivered and set up by Friday to make sure everything was perfect. Since we had so many elements to set up, this Thursday Tent/ Friday rentals delivery appealed to me. Against Nathaniel’s recommendations I trusted her.

The first hint that I should have trusted Nathaniel instead, was the visit to the venue. Nathaniel was there, the rental company he recommended was there, Viviana (our wonderful event coordinator) was there but Imperial did not show up.

The tasting: My husband, daughter and her fiancée were in heaven at the tasting. It was sublime.

This wedding involved 17 months of intense planning with many time consuming elements. I purchased over 50 outdoor chandeliers and over 1,000 boxes of high grade outdoor Christmas lights to illuminate the dance floor and the tent. I sewed custom table linens that were three layers. I had purchased over 30 pieces of Antique; settees, Wing Chairs, etc and had them all custom upholstered to match the wedding. I purchase 30 stained glass pedestal centerpiece floral containers and 60 silver iron floral containers for the side florals. I also purchased 1,000 hex and oval hex mason jars with thousands of candles. These are just a few of the many details that were dependent on the rental company keeping their word and being on time. No amount of complaining by the event coordinator or me could get them to work.

When the Nathaniel arrived on Saturday, the rental company still hadn’t even finished the tent. They had subbed it out to a vendor (Express Rental) without approval that did nothing and was seriously drinking on the job. Nothing was set up; not even the kitchen. Everything was dumped. It was a nightmare of horrific proportions. It was not his job, but he immediately took control of the situation and chewed out the rental company getting them working. It was not his job, nor his server’s job to work on set up. They literally saved the day. I seriously cried for 4 days straight after the wedding because of the rental company’s gross negligence and the thought of what would have had happened if I had not had Nathaniel. The stove didn’t even work and he got another company to immediately deliver an emergency stove. He not only knows food, he knows weddings.

    On to the food:

There is only one word I can think of to describe the food and the staff. Perfect. Not a single dish wasn’t wonderful even though we started an hour late. Hors D’ourves were such a hit. The dinner was AMAZING. No matter what the guests selected, land or sea, all I heard were raves. Sometimes you taste a wonderful meal at a tasting but when it is for 175 people it is not quite the same. Not so with Contemporary.

I have to say that I meet few people in business whose integrity and quality matter more than their bottom line. We are a middle class family and he is kind of a white glove caterer but he treated us with absolute courtesy and respect. His staff was a joy. Not a single complaint about the food or the service. With a crew that size and a sit down dinner that size, and the nightmare with the rental company, I don’t know how he pulled it off.

I am sorry that I can’t adequately describe just how much he did and how truly wonderful he is. His logo is ‘Something sacred at every event’, but it’s not a logo. This is a man who genuinely believes it. We were perfect strangers but he took my event personally. I have had such a devoted and obedient daughter and so his intervention in areas that were not even his responsibility, his attention to detail, his pursuit of excellence have left me in awe.

Big or small, he knows his stuff completely. Not just food but events. I can recommend Contemporary Catering without a single reservation. I can recommend their food, staff, event knowledge and everything about them. If I had to give stars I would give him 10 diamonds.

Can you say grilled cheese station? How about fried mac and cheese? Yep, we had a buffet style wedding and this was on the menu! Nathaniel and the gang at Contemporary were a pleasure to deal with and come up with the most creative and wonderful menus. Did I mention it was good? No, ok - it was GREAT! Best food ever!

Nathaniel and Contemporary Catering are wonderful! They were very flexible, and worked within our budget to create an absolutely delicious appetizer/cocktail party menu. When our cake vendor fell through, they made our own dairy-free chocolate cake recipe, which saved us a ton of money and was (in my opinion) far better than any dairy-free cake from a bakery. Also, being familiar with other vendors in the area, they recommended a local rental company and took care of quotes/interfacing with them. All in all, a great experience! Thank you so much. : )

This was one of the best choices I made for my wedding! I found out after I booked that they are full service and can also do your flowers and other things as well, so keep that in mind as you book. They offered an online menu, but they were up for customizing everything at a really reasonable price. They helped map out our location for tables and also set all the things up we had delivered after our ceremony was over. The staff was really awesome and the food was unbelievable. Everything looked really beautifully presented and everything tasted wonderful. They did really cool mini Dodger dogs as appetizers and we also had a cheeseburger and fries buffet. I really cannot put into words how great this company was and how highly I'd recommend them. They had pretty good communication before, after and during our wedding. We ordered dip-n-dots and the staff was so professional, nobody ate any even though we really didn't want all those to go to waste! :)

We got married at the groom's home and they did a great job of cleaning up. Hardly any mess for us to clean up. They were also really accommodating and worked well with the other services at our wedding. IE, they served our Sprinkles cupcakes, they set-up the flowers, etc.

    Great food/traumatic bride groom experience

Everything everyone said below is true - top notch delicious food, happy guests...so what’s the problem?

Megan was assigned as our coordinator...

Everything was going fine until we discovered (about a month before the wedding) that Megan had our wedding start time an hour later than we had discussed.

Contemporary were one of half a dozen vendors that were all getting constant timeline updates from our wedding planner.

Contemporary were the only ones that had the wrong time...

Now, either Megan did this intentionally to inflate the bill or she just dropped the ball.

(Either she's shrewd or bad at her job. Take your pick, neither one makes you feel very good)

We had to eventually go over her head and call Rob to straighten things out - he apologized and comped us the hour...

From this point on everything with Megan became cold and petty...suddenly it took her 3 days to respond to emails, she had no idea we wanted to serve coffee - $1 per person...extra $1pp to offer decaf, extra $1pp to serve tea. The parents of the bride and groom want both entrees? $6 per plate...this clearly wasn't about adding $300 to their pockets...

She was nickel and diming us because we complained to her boss.

The sponsor of our wedding finally just had it with her, gave her a well deserved tongue lashing, spoke to the owner (Nathaniel) who then comped EVERYTHING she tried to tack on and as further apology comped 3 extra guests that RSVPd last minute.

Had this been the end of it I would never have written this review...but Megan felt undermined and took it out on our families.

Megan's final duty was to oversee the wedding during the day...this is what we got:

    1. The bartender stuck out a tip cup after explicit instructions that we would be paying her tip personally. It's just a tacky horrible look. It had been out for an hour before we realized it - I'm still cringing thinking about it 6 months later.

    2. They never passed out the Challah

    3. Bride and groom never got any wedding cake.

    4. Dessert just sort of appeared without announcement, half the guests didn't realize it was there.

    5. After charging us for vendor meals, the servers passed our appetizers to themselves and the bartenders.

    6. We had a very special 1961 bottle of wine from my parent's wedding they had been saving literally since before I was born - it was for the four of us so we asked that they please just pour it discretely and take the bottle away - they stuck it on the table in front of us prompting chiding from guests that we were "hoarding the good stuff"

    7. When I asked for Megan to come over for an explanation she had already left before the entrees were even cleared.

    8. We were at a venue that charged corkage for wine we brought - after the bartender was reprimanded by our planner for her tip cup she thought it would be funny to report to he venue that we had opened 108 bottles of wine (for 100 guests on top of a full open bar) fortunately we hadn't even purchased 108 bottles and had invoices from the wine seller and pictures of the 50 unopened bottles to prove it.

When I called Nathaniel to complain he didn't excuse the behavior but told me Megan was working 80 hour weeks during wedding season and things occasionally fall through the cracks. As apology he sent over a new Challah, new wedding cake and somehow dug up another 1961 Barolo for us...

I wanted to give myself 6 months to cool down and see how I was feeling before I posted this...the wedding was beautiful and the guests were happy but I will never forgive this company for leaving me frustrated and embarrassed at my own wedding.
